After taking on one of the most unloved homes in the neighborhood, Blaine and Tom are winning the war against bad renovations and green carpet. They just had new VCT floors installed and are now living through that awkward "in between" stage in a renovation.
Blaine is our local absurdist and it is somehow fitting that a single image features a washing machine, a pair of shoes and a glass-eyed statue of a random saint. I'm helping with the window install next week and wanted to grab these shots for posterity. They'll be fun to look back on when I get a chance to shoot the "after" pictures.

The command center…
Blaine is a commercial finisher — he manages the shop, supervises installs and lends a hand with painting — at a local, very high-end cabinetry shop here in the Bay Area. His handiwork can be seen in the high-gloss finish of the ceilings and the furniture-grade finishing of the orange doors in the house. It's pretty bad-ass.
This, too, shall pass… We know this stage well — the in between stage when there's random stuff in all sorts of places. Fortunately, this stage will be fairly short lived for Blaine and Tom. While it likely feels like forever for them, we lived like this for 18 months…
The white VCT laid all in one direction looks amazing and seamless thanks to Contra Costa floors. This method of install is not typical — you'd generally "basketweave" the pattern. However, with the tile grain all running the same direction, it resembles a more uniform and solid-sheet which is far less visually distracting in a home that isn't meant to have a lot of visual clutter.
