ISS Shelving System Install: Day One

This holiday weekend found me heading to Marin to install an ISS shelving system for Matt and Ki — neighbors of Michael and Iris.

I was greeted by a tidy palette and a few boxes tucked into the garage and in short order, had it unpacked and splayed out. One of the things that didn't greet us was a detailed set of instructions. A low-res PDF was emailed but the photos in the instructions were so poorly shot and so low res (and the instructions so generic) that they really weren't much help. Fortunately, I've a black-belt in cabinet assembly after our kitchen assembly and these things are pretty standard. However, the unlabeled cabinetry parts in the palette coupled with the lack of decent instruction added at least four hours to the install (maybe six) as we had to test fit, twirl around and — in most cases — re-assemble the parts to get the correct configuration. It would have been nice to have had stickers (drawer side, cabinet back, cabinet top, inside/outside) on the dozens of pieces rather than spending 1/2 of a saturday sorting them out.

Chris and Laura’s Door-a-Palooza

Our friends and neighbors, Chris and Laura, were in dire need of door replacements. Their house was a victim of a shoddy flip and they've done a lot to bring it back to life.

All of the interior doors seemed to be made of pressed cardboard and a slight tap seemed to put a dent in them — they were terrible. The front door was solid, but very inappropriate for the house. This is where we come in… seeing as door replacement has become kind of a "thing" for us.

Bret and Mary-Peyton’s New Kitchen

Our friends and neighbors Bret and Mary-Peyton just finished a kitchen remodel and we stopped by today to snap a few pictures.

Bret spent most of his winter vacation finishing this off with Mary-Peyton's help. It turned out well, no? In the mix is a massive redwood table made by Bret and some great vintage Poulsen Danish lights. The wrapped countertop looks great in gray Silestone.

Big Fish in a Small Eichler

Over the past few years, one of the things we've done quite often is to hit most every MCM open house and estate sale we can find. It's a great glimpse into another space — and in many cases, another life. We've seen time capsules like the house on Shay Drive as well as diamonds-in-the-rough in our own neighborhood. In many cases, you can even find a few treasures.

A few weeks ago, while working on a project in Marin, I stumbled across an estate sale in an Eichler in Terra Linda. What I walked into is best expressed in pictures. While refraining from judgement, I can say that it's certainly the most unique Eichler I've been in in a while with some simply unforgettable choices.

I walked out with a few pieces for Casie's ModApple shop, but the best items might be the photos.

The Littlest Rednecks

Marty left a huge void in the house… so much so that it took two cats to replace him. Meet Arthur and Gracie — the newest, littlest rednecks.

They've become quite inseperable as the below photos illustrate. And before you ask, yes… there's lots more photos, but posting them would turn this blog into CuteOverload. Click the images for higher-res adorableosity.

The Ranch Design Group

I've been meaning to do a post on our friends Leah and Darren at The Ranch Design Group for some time now, but it seems Rena Tom beat us to it. Check it out.

Concrete_and_clay

Leah and I met in college half-a-lifetime ago and have somehow lived within a local transit route from another since then (and at one point about 150 yards apart)… and for a few years, she, Darren and I all worked in the same office building. Weird how those things go.

She and Darren started The Ranch a few years ago and they're worth paying attention to. Check out more of their stuff at their Etsy shop.
