Ever been to Rodeo, California (row-DAY-oh)? Didn't think so… I never had before I went in search of new redwood fence boards. This story has three tangents, beware.
Well, the new pool project is progressing and having met with the Inspector for an initial look-see, I'm feeling much more comfortable about a few things. We only really have to make two changes: redesign the exterior gates to swing outward and change the swing of the door on the equipment room. This is good as they're both relatively easy fixes. However, the new gate design means some reconfiguring, which means new materials like redwood fence boards. This brings us to why I went to Rodeo yesterday.
Lisa has a lot in Rodeo from which she and her husband sell redwood at great prices. I ran upon her ad on CraigsList and gave her a call. She gave me directions to Rodeo — a town in the shadow of my route to Marin (HWY4 to I80), but one I'd never heard of. Lisa mentioned that the main drag used to be the "highway" before they constructed the adjacent I80 (literally, the town is in the shadow of this major thoroughfare). Like a lot of California towns, you can tell it's heyday was in the 30s and 40s — lots of pre-war development and a perhaps a bit of a post-war boom. But now, it seems like most of the town is vacant. There are a few bars which seem to be the only real activity downtown… and a bait/taxidermy shop.
But I was there to buy redwood and Lisa had lots. I bought ConHeart fenceboards for 40% less than the local suppliers… or ConHeart for about the same price you'd pay for ConCommon at the Big Box stores.
