The Lambda Stool (+ Lambda-XL)

Update: I created the original stool in 2017. My kid used (and abused) it. It came time to pass it along to Stella, so I refreshed it and built a larger version for her mom, Courtney. You can check this out over at the Instagram page.

Aug 2024: The other day, my 4-year-old started to stand on a slick and rickety fiberglass shell chair in the attempts to reach something off of the shelves in his new room set up. I stopped him. He got a bit upset, and I told him the chair was unsafe and that he shouldn't stand on that. I reached quickly for one of the wire-based stool-tables I'd made, and he said, "Dada, you can't stand on a table"… "Ok, fine: I'll make something else…"

The next day, I made the prototype of the Lambda stool in the workshop (pictured here). He's quite happy, and it works well for him, but I already see some improvements for his particular set-up (desk-height step, congruous materials, etc.).

Jennifer’s New Coffee Table

Jennifer contacted me a few weeks ago about some custom benches. She mentioned that she was eventually looking for a coffee table. As it turned out, I had some excess stock that suited the job quite well. I contacted her on Monday about the idea and sent her a comp-sketch and had it finished by Thursday afternoon.

Wire Base Stools

We sourced these great powder coated frames in black, gray and white and thought they'd make great stools — and they do.

I topped each with maple multi-ply (12in square) with a lacquer and
hand-rubbed wax finish. The stools stack for easy storage. They're 14in
sq at the base, sit 14in high and have a 12in square top.

We're using them in the nursery as a side table/foot rest, but they're easy to grab and tote from room to room.

For sale on Craigslist for $40 each.

Bench Prototype

When making the maple multi-ply topped stools, I was left with 3 very nice, new nylon-covered cushions which were original to the bases. What to do?

Make a bench, of course.

This one stands 16in high and is 38in long and 14in deep (the
cushions are 12in square). It is made of cumaru and multi-ply and joined
with pocket-screws and stainless steel face-screws capped with a
contrasting cumaru plug.

I'll be making more based on this design, but until then: anyone need
a bench? Until I get an Esty.com site set up it's for sale via Craigslist for $50.
