{"id":4288,"date":"2015-05-28T13:12:35","date_gmt":"2015-05-28T13:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hunterwimmer.com\/redneckmodern\/2015\/05\/28\/securing-picture-frames\/"},"modified":"2015-05-28T13:12:35","modified_gmt":"2015-05-28T13:12:35","slug":"securing-picture-frames","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hunterwimmer.com\/redneckmodern\/2015\/05\/28\/securing-picture-frames\/","title":{"rendered":"Securing Picture Frames"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropcam.com\/c\/7fca43d2dd8d47eab9e96c8ab7a8596a.mp4\" target=\"_self\">2 year old decided it&#039;d be a good idea to make a hoist out of his stuffed animals, climb 1\/2 way out of his crib and attempt to rip the pictures from the wall.<\/a> Not good. The large picture closest to him has been secured to the wall \u2014 top and bottom \u2014 since it was hung, but we thought these were far enough away. We were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>This means today was spent securing these frames to the wall and it seemed like a good time for a DIY-tutorial&#8230; especially for folks in earthquake country.<\/p>\n<p>I seem to recall seeing a securing system like this at an art gallery years ago, but I&#039;ve never seen anything commercially available that is as simple. There are many more complex systems, but a security point at the bottom of the frame keeps it nice and secure to the wall&#8230; and in order to remove the frame, you have to unscrew the tab. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cshardware.com\/15-051.html\" target=\"_self\">mending plate<\/a> might work, but I wanted something a bit thinner and more discreet.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with my favorite way to hang pictures \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/p\/OOK-Hangman-200-lb-French-Cleat-Picture-Hanger-with-Wall-Dog-Mounting-Screws-55316\/202341629\" target=\"_self\">a french cleat<\/a> \u2014 it provides for a rock solid mounting solution.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I made my own securing tabs from some mirror handing hardware ($3) and some pin-nails.<\/p>\n<p>1: Bend the hanger back at the first bend &#8212; turning it from a J to an L &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>2: Mark the center of the bottom of your frame.<\/p>\n<p>3: Drill a small hole for a pin nail to secure the tab to the frame&#8230; You might skip this and use glue, but a hard-connection is best.<\/p>\n<p>4: Attach tab to frame.<\/p>\n<p>5: Hang and level picture and secure tab to wall (you might need to use an anchor depending on your wall).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"0\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8345166b769e201b8d11b8422970c image-full img-responsive\" src=\"\/redneckmodern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/6a00d8345166b769e201b8d11b8422970c-800wi.jpg\" title=\"0\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8345166b769e201b7c791ed61970b image-full img-responsive\" src=\"\/redneckmodern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/6a00d8345166b769e201b7c791ed61970b-800wi.jpg\" title=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I did use a bit of quick-dry epoxy on the tabs (as well as nails) for extra security in attaching them to the frame. And, for the bottom screws, you might use a wall anchor, but I&#039;ve found that screwing in the screw first, backing it out, coating the threads with glue, and re-screwing does a very good job of securing the screw (and tab) to the wall\/wallboard \u2014 to each their own there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, my 2 year old decided it&#039;d be a good idea to make a hoist out of his stuffed animals, climb 1\/2 way out of his crib and attempt to rip the pictures from the wall.
