The basis of them is the use of a resin-cellulose composite veneer on top of our maple multi-ply.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Birch-comp_17\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8345166b769e201b8d1e60645970c image-full img-responsive\" src=\"\/norcalmod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/09\/6a00d8345166b769e201b8d1e60645970c-800wi.jpg\" title=\"Birch-comp_17\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThe composite material is amazing. It&#039;s rock-hard, impervious to moisture, solid-surface, sandable, and the finish is permanently renewable. For a surface that gets a lot of use (think: desk surfaces or tables), this is ideal. The material is expensive at thicker sizes which makes using it as a veneer topping a perfect solution.<\/p>\n<p>The finial finish can take a variety of forms, but the best \u2014 and most renewable (from an &quot;able to be refreshed&quot; standpoint) \u2014 is a wax\/oil finish similar to many cutting board finishes. In fact, while the pieces will ship with a more-unique shop-applied finish, you can use a few <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=sr_nr_i_12?rh=k%3Acutting+board+finish%2Ci%3Agarden&amp;keywords=cutting+board+finish&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1463330953\">more-common<\/a> finishes for renewal and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>We&#039;ll be able to offer 1\/8in and 1\/4in topping upon request (What you see here is 1\/8in).<\/p>\n<p><em>I&#039;m really looking forward to doing more things with this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">The fine print: Currently, material sourcing takes some time as it&#039;s not a locally\/readily available material (and the 1\/8in and 1\/4in come from two different places), but it&#039;s something we can build into the schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#039;ve been busy in the NorCalMod workshop prototyping with new techniques and materials.
